“The English have no respect for their language, and will not teach their children to speak it. They spell it so abominably that no man can teach himself what it sounds like. It is impossible for an Englishman to open his mouth without making some other Englishman hate or despise him. German and Spanish are accessible to foreigners: English is not accessible even to Englishmen.” - George Bernard Shaw in his Preface to ‘Pygmalion’

In the 1960s, Professor Higgins, a popular radio presenter, visits a small Welsh town hoping to record a phonetics documentary. By chance he meets a young woman, Eliza, who soon proves capable of not only changing her fortune, but also changing the face (and voice) of broadcast!

With live music and a brilliant cast of community actors, this far-out interpretation of Shaw’s most famous work was a fresh take on a very well-known text.

“It is a pleasure to welcome you to 2018’s summer season Community Theatre Production. We have enjoyed the challenge of working in a different space and putting together a performance in a relatively short space of time. Is has been a lot of fun to tell the traditional tale of Eliza Doolittle in a 1960’s Welsh setting, and I can’t thank the cast enough for their time and effort in bringing this idea to life. They have brought a great deal of playfulness and enthusiasm to the process, always willing to “pitch in” with both ideas and props.” - Anna Sherratt, Director

“It's been quite an experience, being catapulted into such a whirlwind production as a first-time co-director, but it's also been an absolute pleasure. With a six week turnaround, it can't be overstated just how tremendous Anna, the cast and the band have all been throughout a mad, brilliant process. Hacking Shaw's script to pieces may have been immensely satisfying, but not half as satisfying as it's been to watch this group make Pygmalion their own. I hope you enjoy the result as much as we do.” -Daniel Abbott, Director

We would like to offer our thanks to Nick Bache, Pete Lochery, Lefi Jones and Dyfan Llyr Rhys for their help setting up the beautiful lighting and sound systems. We are grateful to Gill Ogden and Sam Thorne for the opportunity to be a part of this production. Thanks go out to Rachel Scurlock, Alice Wymer and Saoirse Morgan for marketing assistance as well as Curtis Rodney for the marvelous poster, and finally to Auriel Martin for front of house coordination.

“A group of young people gather in a hospital ward to face another day of poking, prodding, pills and poison, with their fates decided by statistics and luck. A group of young adventurers meet to begin a quest across a strange land, with their fates decided by the roll of some dice. This is a tale of courage and friendship in two worlds, where battling dragons often feels easier than battling cancer.”

Awaken Productions bring this unique piece of devised theatre to life, with alternative story options as the audience roll a selection of large dice! Many performances have included special charity fundraisers for CLIC Sargent – a charity that supports young people and their families through the devastation of cancer. The piece also features original music written by young people on the CLIC Sargent music programme.

In 2017 the production team won the McVities “Biscuit Hero” award for fundraising and awareness raising for CLIC Sargent. This is truly a one-of-a-kind evening, with laughter, tears, and above all, hope.
